Writing continues, simply at a snail’s pace.

It’s times like this that I remind myself that some talented authors have written grand stories at a slow pace. One of my favorite is that Neil Gaiman wrote Coraline with only 50 words a night. Now, I’m definitely no Neil Gaiman, but I use that as inspiration to continue to put words down. A paragraph here, a sentence there. It all moves the story forward to completion.

Maybe some day I’ll be able to write full time. Right now, other things have to take precedent and so I continue to write when and where I can. I’m not really setting deadlines for myself anymore, simply because it’s not realistic. The story will be told when it’s told and I have to accept that. Those that know me know that’s hard for me to do. So I’m still aiming to have it done buy the Thanksgiving – ha.

Thanks for hanging with me. I’ll try to make it worth the wait.

For those that follow, you recall that back in March I submitted a short story to Gimdark Mag. This was an open submission call. Unfortunately, they decided to not pick up my story. They received hundreds of submissions, and from what I’ve heard, many by people who have been doing this way longer than I have. Congrats to those that got chosen. I can’t wait to read those submissions!

As for my short story, well, the story isn’t over yet. I’ve sent it out to some of my regular beta reads for feedback. I may see if there is somewhere else I can submit it, or publish it myself as a digital only short story. I really like what I crafted for this tale. It’s different from my other writing, more “adult”, dark and moody, morally questionable. Not something I want to write a full book on per se, but if enough people like it, I can see myself doing a series of short stories in this universe. Well see what the future brings.

Till then, book 3 of Jax’s tale continues, and this weekend is looking like a good weekend to get some writing done!

Hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day weekend. One of the most honorable holidays we have. Remembering those that have fallen in service to our country is the least we can do. Also, remember you don’t need a holiday to show such respect, make the holiday 365.

On big cookouts for me this weekend. A simple time at home. I’m almost finished with the current chapter. Sometimes when writing I forget I can put in place holders around certain things (technology for example) and keep writing. Instead, I dive into a rabbit hole of web searches looking for the right scientific principle or related engineering. While I enjoy those searches, it slows the actual writing. I’m working on not getting distracted.

Book three is moving at a good clip now. This next month I should see some big gains as I aim to finish the writing process this year. Wish me luck!

Interesting things happen when you write. A scene I had planned in my head for the middle of the book, fit better at the beginning. No spoilers, but it’s a fun scene that really draws from the premise of “submarine in space”.

Each book I’ve written I’ve done in a slightly different matter. This is mostly me having fun, but it has also led to each book having a different feel. I enjoy that because it keeps thing interesting for me, gives me growth as a writer and it’s also showing the growth of my main character, Jax. I didn’t really plan that last part, but now that recognize it, I might lean into it a bit for book 3. As always, it’s an adventure.

This weeks img is from book 1 chapter 23!
